Three ideas that are often mixed together

Gender identity describes how a person identifies. Gender expression is how someone presents aspects of themselves through clothing, voice, gesture or style. Sexual orientation concerns attraction. None of these concepts automatically stands in for another.

An androgynous, masculine or feminine look does not reveal identity or orientation by itself. Treating it that way confuses a visible choice with personal information that is not contained in an image.

Expression is flexible

The same person can change clothes, hair or pose from one day to another and remain the same person. They may also explore different codes without every change becoming a public declaration.

Style categories also depend on context. A garment may look traditional in one country, professional in another and experimental in a third.

How GenderGuess uses categories

The game's two answers are not calculated from physical features. They come from the linked public description for each figure. The binary format is an editorial limitation, so we do not include non-binary people whose identities it would misrepresent.

The aim is not to decide who looks masculine or feminine enough. It is to examine how much trust we place in visual signals that have no authority to define a person.

Respectful language

After the reveal we use the public name and documented description. If a source changes or is incomplete, the correction system accepts a newer link for human review.

Respecting an identity does not depend on having guessed it. It depends on updating our language when better information is available.
