How every challenge is built

GenderGuess does not try to determine identity from appearance. It turns an initial visual assumption into an opportunity to check reliable public sources.

Last updated: 12 August 2026

1. Selection

We only include adult public figures with an accessible biographical profile and a portrait available under an open licence or in the public domain. We seek a range of professions, eras, countries and visual styles without treating anyone’s identity as a joke.

2. Documented answer

The binary options reflect only how the linked public sources describe the person. They are not a biometric inference or a statement about anatomy, sexual orientation or gender expression. Non-binary identities are excluded because the current format cannot represent them adequately.

3. Sources

Every answer reveals the name, a biographical profile, the Wikidata entity, and the photo’s authorship and licence. The complete image list is available under Credits.

4. Randomness and score

Each round mixes five profiles documented as men and five documented as women. Their order is shuffled, and a new round attempts not to repeat the previous ten profiles. The score measures game answers, not an ability to determine identity from appearance.

5. Corrections

Sources and the way people identify can change. Every profile includes a correction link where a newer source can be submitted; reports are recorded for editorial review before content changes.

6. Responsible advertising

Advertising areas remain separate from answers and game controls to prevent accidental clicks. Ads do not activate without a verified publisher, a valid ads.txt file and a certified consent platform.
